Thank you to those organisations below who are working with the New Zealand Food Safety Authority to promote food safety.

There are an estimated 200,000 cases of foodborne illlness in New Zealand each year. About 40 percent of those are caused by unsafe food handling practices in the home. That’s about 96,000 people afflicted with a foodborne illness caused by either themselves or someone they know.

So while the products you produce may be safe and fit for purpose when they leave your premises, what happens to them when they get home is out of your hands. In the eyes of some of your customers, it’s your products that are to blame - not their handling of them. actices is paramount. That’s why the New Zealand Food Safety Authority is working with organisations to reduce the country’s high levels of foodborne illness through helping consumers practice safe food handling in the home.

Association with the New Zealand Food Safety Authority highlights your role as a responsible producer or manufacturer. It shows that you are interested and care about your customers’ wellbeing and it allows your organisation to stand out from the crowd.

Evaluations of past campaigns have shown that the messages are getting through. A majority of New Zealanders can recall at least one of the food safety campaign’s promotions and say they have made changes to their home hygiene practices as a result. Among the allies promoting our messages are Partnership mascots Foodsafe Freddie and his cousin Foodsafe Feleti. These characters are used to promote safe food handling practices in a number of ways, including television and radio advertising, promotional materials and in person at events.
